Slovakia in the 18th century

Set in the Kingdom of Hungary in the 1700s, "Bunika" is a vampire story which blends modern horror with classical gothic fiction and strong LGBT themes.

Who and
Where

The novel centres on Marika, who gets turned to vampirism against her will and seeks retribution on the sect responsible

The events take place in and around the towns of Modra, Prešporok (Bratislava) and various locations in central Slovakia, then part of the Kingdom of Hungary.

What and
When

We follow Marika over a single fortnight focusing on her vampiric turning, her character development, her sexual awakening and her retribution.

The narrative occurs in the early 1700s when witchcraft and talk of vampirism were both rife in Eastern Europe.

How and
Why

Though Marika's turning occurs early on, the reasons why become apparent only later.

We discover the true cause of her vampirism along with her as she travels a physical and metaphysical path of tribulation, love, self-discovery and empowerment.
